Marine SURVEYS and consults

better information, smoother cruising

deep understanding, strong ethics, clear communication

a surveyor in the know

Cruising boats are a distinct class. Work with a marine surveyor who specializes in them.

Building, repairing, and inspecting cruising boats has been my life’s passion. I’ve worked at boatyards, as a traveling boatwright, and now as a traveling marine surveyor.

I am also a cruising sailor myself, and sail and live on my Kelly Peterson 44 Dogfish, having extensively refit her.

I bring deep technical knowledge, high standards, and extensive practical experience to every survey and consult. I provide the surveys and consulting services I would want for myself and my own boat.

Good decisions are built on good information. Intelligently surveyed, appropriately analyzed, and effectively communicated – I am in the business of good information.

BUYING A VESSEL?

A pre-purchase survey is the most powerful way to protect yourself in the boat buying process.

The cost of a pre-purchase survey usually represents a tiny percentage of the vessel price. But the power of having a respected, accurate, and thorough pre-purchase survey is hard to overstate.

Having an incomplete assessment of vessel condition can result in expensive surprises and derailed cruising schedules. An accurate and impartial survey finds issues that other eyes may miss, and becomes a tool for price negotiations during the sale.

As a fellow boat owner, I encourage all boat buyers to invest in the highest quality survey from the most ethical surveyor you can find.

You want to find out about vessel problems before you own them, not after. Dime for dime, investing in a top-shelf survey is one of the smartest budget decisions you can make when boat shopping.

1-1-1

One hour, once over, $100

Are you interested in a boat listing, but not ready to commit to a full survey – or even an airplane ticket?

If you’re just starting to look at a boat and want to learn more without risking the cost of a full survey, ask about 1-1-1. You’ll tell me about your background, goals, budget, and a few other things. I’ll spend an hour looking at the listing, doing some research, and using my years of experience to form an initial impression. I will come back to you with one of three recommendations: Strong Potential, Some Potential, or Pass, and a brief note of my thoughts and recommendations. If you do end up moving forward with a survey from me on the vessel, I’ll credit $100 off your survey cost.

ANY COMPLAINTS OR pains?

a trusted surveyor is the general practitioner for your boat

At key moments in boat ownership and upgrading, having a trusted professional opinion provides a huge safety factor. It also saves you from wasted time going down the wrong rabbit holes, and protects your cruising savings from unnecessary projects and complications.

I can help you identify problems accurately, pinpoint appropriate project priorities, effect high quality and efficient repairs, and make coherent outfitting choices.

As a boat owner, your insurance company may require periodic surveys on your vessel. They want to know what they’re insuring. For you, it’s an opportunity to have an independent eye give the vessel you live, cruise, and rely on a once-over.

I like to think of the insurance survey like going for a check-up at your GP. Periodic check-ins give you peace of mind. They can also identify hidden issues early, before they become disasters.
